Educational workshops

One of the tasks of the Centre is to conduct educational programmes with the goal of promoting and preserving the natural values of the Tramuntana area and the entire island of Cres. Educational programmes are carried out through workshops aimed at children, local people, and interested groups of visitors. To participate in workshops, prior arrangement and the agreement of the staff of the Centre is required. A free tour of the exhibitions in the Centre is included for all workshop participants.

The Centre offers several workshops intended for and aimed at primary school children. However, anyone interested and wanting to learn more is welcome to participate!

Regular themed workshop

Griffon vultures (‘Creski orli’)

The ‘Griffon vultures’ workshop for elementary school children is available throughout the year. It offers an interactive and fun way to learn more about griffon vultures, their interesting lifestyle, endangerment, and the necessity of protecting and preserving them. The workshop takes place in the Centre and lasts 45 minutes.

This educational program was sent to the Ministry of Science and Education in the verification process. The Ministry has delivered an opinion and confirmed that the content is designed in accordance with the guidelines of the profession and is linked to the annual plan, program, goals and activities of the school curriculum.

Specialised workshops

„The Forests and Labyrinths of Tramuntana“

The Centre also offers the opportunity to participate in field workshops, which is only possible by prior arrangement during the spring, summer and early autumn months because of the warmer weather and the presence of plants and animals. The Forests and Labyrinths of Tramuntana workshop is an interesting field workshop for elementary school children which presents the rich flora and fauna of the Tramuntana area and the island of Cres in an interesting, dynamic and fun way. The workshop includes a stay in nature and a walk along the nearby forest paths, and the expected duration of the workshop (including a tour of the exhibition in the Centre) is four hours.

„Mediterranean Ponds“

‘Mediterranean Ponds’ is a field workshop intended for elementary school children. Participants take a walk along forest paths to two ponds located in the vicinity of the Centre to learn about the flora and fauna in and around the ponds. The Mediterranean ponds are small water oases in the karst areas of the Kvarner islands whose existence is crucial for the survival and diversity of such a varied fauna. Aside from their exceptional natural value as habitats, throughout history they have made it possible for both people and numerous plant and animal species to survive on the sparse karst soil. The expected duration of the workshop (including a tour of the exhibition in the Centre) is four hours.

„Gromače“ Dry Stone Walls

Natural heritage is often connected to traditional heritage, which is why the Centre, apart from workshops dedicated to natural phenomena, also offers a workshop aimed at preserving traditional heritage. Since invasive game (wild boars) in Tramuntana cause the dry stone walls (locally known as ‘gromače’) to collapse, interested groups of secondary school students and adults can join in workshops to restore these ruined walls. Workshop participants are introduced to the traditional construction of dry stone walls in the northern part of the island of Cres. By rebuilding these walls, they also contribute to the restoration and preservation of traditional heritage, thus helping the local community and plant and animal species whose survival is connected to dry stone walls.
Apart from regular workshops, the Centre can on request also offer specific workshops. These are primarily connected to the biological diversity of the island of Cres and the entire Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. However, such requests must be submitted at least three months in advance (for example: workshops on the biological diversity of pastures/the sea/rocks and scree, and other areas; cultural and historical heritage; karst geodiversity) and prepared in collaboration with Priroda Public Institution.
